Outdoor Event Commission for 2010 Festivities

In 2010 Portsmouth Festivities will celebrate The Victorians - Age of Wonder in a festival running from 17 - 27 June 2010.

Following a hugely successful Arts Council funded project in 2009 featuring Ghost Ship: A Pageant for Portsmouth devised by Walk the Plank, Portsmouth Festivities would like to commission a site-specific bespoke community event in 2010.

The artist/creative team will be expected to consider both the location and the theme of the festival. We are seeking creative proposals for an outdoor, free, theatrical event - ideally including fireworks - involving young people and stimulating their interest in the Victorian age and in scientific discovery and engineering. The event should involve daytime and evening elements.

2010 marks the 150th anniversary of the building of HMS Warrior, the largest and fastest warship in her day, combining wind and steam power. Inspired by the engineering of Portsmouth-born I K Brunel, Warrior was built in the year that Portsmouth-born Charles Dickens wrote 'Great Expectations'. An event could also feature the Romantics and their scientific experiments and explorations, typified in the extraordinary balloon flights of the 18th and 19th centuries. Other aspects to consider incorporating into a proposal include the development of the Victorian seafront in Portsmouth and Southsea. There might also be an opportunity to incorporate traditional entertainments such as Punch and Judy.

The project must involve an educational element with a programme of workshops which may lead to participation in the final event. The final event will take place on 26 or 27 June 2010.

Deadline for completed tender applications is Monday 30th November 2009. Candidates will be selected for interview by members of Portsmouth Festivities in consultation with Portsmouth City Council. Interviews will take place on 7th and 8th December. Emailed applications will be welcome.
