A Pageant for Portsmouth
GHOST SHIP
Sunday 28th June 2009
A fabulous finale to the Festivities. Celebrate Henry VIII’s birthday at this unique event created by Walk the Plank for Portsmouth, bringing the past and present together, with entertainment for all the family.
1pm Live music and entertainment all afternoon at Southsea Bandstand
Fabulous Folk and Sea Shanties from Kelly’s Tattoo, Bernis, Chris Ricketts, Amalthea; juggling demonstrations & workshops with the Citrus Brothers.
2pm Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
Activities and entertainment for all the family at the Mary Rose Museum, with Falconry and Tudor Cooking. Meet Henry VIII and his court as well as sailors from the Mary Rose.
3.30pm Procession from Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to Southsea Bandstand
A spectacular colourful Pageant inspired by the Tudors, with a cast of sailors, shipwrights, flag bearers and musicians. The procession sets off from the Mary Rose, parades through the streets of Old Portsmouth to Southsea Bandstand.
5pm Family Picnic and Food Fair at Southsea Bandstand
The celebration continues with entertainment and music from Saturday Night Beaver, Tiny Spark and Hold Fast, living history and food stalls including a Hog Roast and local ice cream.
10 pm Ghost Ship Spectacle at Castle Field
A Twilight Fire Spectacle for all the family to enjoy. A cast of hundreds, a burning anchor, lighting effects and spectacular staging: parkour, dancing, music and drama with fire and fireworks celebrating the birth of the modern Navy and Henry VIII’s favourite warship.

Field will be open to the public from 9 pm. Show starts at approx 10pm
and finishes at approx 10.45 pm, weather dependent. Details are subject
to change.
This event is FREE to all.
Participating schools include Portsmouth Grammar School, Admiral Lord Nelson School, King Richard School Paulsgrove (evening show) and Portsmouth Grammar Junior School, St Swithuns Primary School, Corpus Christi Primary School and young people from ‘Pompey Stars’ (daytime pageant). A programme of workshops has taken place in schools and at the Mary Rose Trust on the weeks and months leading up to the show involving music: traditional shanty singing and 21st century ‘rap’ shanty singing, dancing, parkour, pennant making and Tudor diet and healthy eating.

Join the celebrations for the 500th Anniversary of King Henry VIII’s
coronation and the commissioning of his favourite warship, the Mary Rose.
Make your own Tudor pennant to carry in the spectacular Tudor Pageant
on Sunday 28 June.
